Post Punk

The Project
This project about Post Punk consists of a three set bundle. First is the catalogue, second is the process book and third is the peripheral item. For the catalogue I listed Post Punk albums from the start of Punk to alternative bands like Sonic Youth. The process book I made about the making of the Joy Division album “Unknown Pleasures” and the peripheral is fittingly a cassette tape, to actually listen to the Post Punk music.

Catalogue
Making a catalogue of all music with the genre “Post Punk” will take up an entire trilogy of books because of its wide and varied music selection. First of all I decided to make the catalogue in chronological order starting from Punk music in 1977 up to Alternative bands in the 90s like Sonic Youth and the Pixies, showing how the genre changes. Then break up the categories into different genres and only focus on important or stand out albums.

Process Book
The process book is about Joy Division‘s first and the lead singer’s last album, “Unknown Pleasures”. With this album being the most famous and most iconic, I decided to break down how it was made. From how the band initially met at a Sex Pistols show, how they met with Factory Records and how they met sound director Martin Hannett. How tragedy struck when their frontman Ian Curtis decided to take his own life, but then the aftermath and how the New Order formed out of it.

Peripheral Item
For the peripheral item I made a mixtape. Since all the booklets were cassette sized and were about Post Punk music I thought you should be able to listen to Post Punk music at the end of it. I made the mixtape using an MP3 file and a tape deck and I arranged the songs in chronological order from 1977 to 1995, but also separated them into different sub-genres like New Wave, Gothic Rock and Alternative.
